BIOGRAPHY:
Country artist DERRYL PERRY really stands out among the crop of artists debuting singles on the radio dial this year. Those just now becoming familiar with this talented newcomer are often surprised to learn about his recent history and accomplishments.
As a live performer, Derryl has established a growing legion of fans through non-stop touring and a dynamic stage show that mixes poignant ballads with danceable, high-energy tunes. Since 2000, he's logged over 700 fair, festival, casino and major club performances in 25 states. He's also opened for such major recording artists as Diamond Rio, Tracy Byrd, Joe Diffie, Chris Ledoux, Andy Griggs, Asleep at the Wheel, Gene Watson and Gary Allan.
As an artist, Derryl's unique musical style blends the edge of today's Country with the classic traditions of Americana and Texas Music. It's a potent style, infused with a Southwestern flavor that he's picked up through years of songwriting and performing.
Originally hailing from Texas City, TX, Derryl grew up in the midst of a Texas Music scene where the term "Country" describes a lifestyle as much as it does a genre of music. His blue-collar beginnings, combined with the musical influences of such prominent Texas artists as Willie Nelson, Gary Stewart and George Strait, provided Derryl with abundant inspiration to draw upon as he began developing his own unique musical voice. He spent several years performing with bands around the competitive Dallas/Ft. Worth club circuit while honing his songwriting skills with the help of songwriter friends in Nashville.
Eventually, Derryl relocated to Nashville where he released an independent demo project that garnered substantial music industry attention. One of the tracks from that project, "The Ink Hasn't Even Dried," was included on the prestigious ASCAP EAR compilation CD. Additionally, several songs Derryl had written or co-written were recorded by other Country artists or performed by artists on the Grand Ole Opry. In September of 2002, a demo version of Derryl's song "You Will" was featured in the USA Television Network movie BLOOD CRIME.
In 2004, Derryl signed a recording deal with Nashville-based Music City Records and recorded his debut album ALL JUST TO GET TO YOU. Featuring his first radio single "Four Nights In Albuquerque," the album brings to fruition the time and effort that Derryl has spent meticulously crafting, collecting and recording songs that fit his unique musical style. J. Gary Smith, who has worked with Andy Griggs, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Bonnie Raitt and Lonestar in a production capacity, spearheaded the studio production of the album with Derryl taking on a co-producer role.
Five (5) of the tracks on the ALL JUST TO GET TO YOU album were either written or co-written by Derryl, including "Four Nights In Albuquerque." According to Derryl, the song is actually based upon a true story. "I wrote it on the steering wheel while I was driving from Albuquerque to Cheyenne" says Derryl. "I thought it might be a little too personal until I performed it live one night and the feedback from the audience was overwhelmingly positive. It's now become a signature song during my live shows."
Perhaps Derryl's personal connection to "Four Nights In Albuquerque" is what MUSIC ROW's Robert K. Oermann perceived upon reviewing the song. "Make room for another Derryl!" proclaimed Oermann. "This singer-songwriter is a definite DISCovery. His honky-tonk vocal is super expressive, and he's got a dandy story to tell with his lyric of finding unexpected romance."
